The Vanquishers by Kalynn Bayron is the tale of Boog and her friends. Boog and her friends live in a world much like ours, they mention pop culture a lot; however, there is a slight difference: vampires exist. They did until the Vanquishers eliminated them all, or it seems that way until one of Boog’s friends goes missing.
The book carries a nice spooky atmosphere. Even at the beginning when Boog and her friends are hanging out or making the poster for their school project there seems to be this…creepiness to everything. It reminds me of those photos where you see the kids playing in the park and in the background is a mountain lion watching them. The story feels like that. Boog is saying fun, happy things but at the same time there is an ominous feeling all around.
I did have a problem that it took about half the book before Aaron, one of Boog’s friends, went missing. The first half was Boog and company hanging out and going to a barbeque or going skating. It didn’t feel boring, but it didn’t feel exciting. It was necessary to the plot and to developing the world, but I did keep wondering when the action would begin. However, once Aaron goes missing, the action goes full force. The ominous feeling cranks up to fear quickly and soon the kids are in a panic.
I enjoyed that the book is scary but not so scary it would frighten kids. You feel like the kids are in danger but not in worrisome danger.
The Vanquishers is an excellent story for middle school age children to young young adults, like 13-15. The story has action and suspense but also a sense that things will work out.
Until the next wormhole…thanks for reading.
