Skull Island (on Netflix) follows Charlie, Mike, Annie, and others as they try to escape and survive Skull Island after being shipwrecked. As you could guess, it features King Kong.

The animation was well done. I could quickly tell by the “realistic” style that the show was not meant for little kids. I enjoyed that there was no confusion as to who the audience was. There was no “Oh, this is for children” only to have “WHOA! They put that in a kids’ show!” a few minutes later.

The acting and writing was also well done. I could believe that Mike and Charlie had been friends for a long time. How they spoke to each other–the banter–showed their relationship. All the characters were believable. I also enjoyed that the characters didn’t do stupid things in the name of moving the plot along. They reacted the way anyone would upon arriving on an island of danger.

My biggest “problem” with the series is the cliffhanger ending. SPOLIERS AHEAD!!

They left Mike and Charlie in time sensitive situations and then showed Annie two weeks later. I felt like “I assume everyone’s OK now.” But it made me wonder what did the botanist and soldiers do? Leave Charlie behind? I’m assuming they left with Mike at least, but Charlie was in a…uh, serious situation; a time jump didn’t make sense.

However, I did like the references to the recent Kong movies, like the walled village and the skull crusher monster things. Also, Charlie’s father says that the reason he started looking for monsters is because he saw one in the water. He says that light came from it and it looked like a dragon or eel. Could Godzilla be making an appearance?

If you’re a fan of Kong, or kaiju monsters or paranormal adventures, Skull Island is worth a look. Too bad there is only eight episodes this season, but it is still a fun show; I watched the whole season in one day.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Until the next wormhole…thanks for reading!
