So far I'm enjoying the LEGO Fortnite game mode. So far, I think it's better than Minecraft.

First, other Fortnite NPCs will join your village. The game doesn't seem as…lonely as Minecraft. Also, the NPCs will give you tips. You aren't dropped into some world with no idea what to do; the NPCs will say things like, "I think beds would be nice." The NPCs will also join you on adventures or give you gifts; you can also send them out to gather resources. The NPCs will also attack any foe that enters your village. They aren't helpless like certain Minecraft villagers.

The building is much better. You don't have to be a master builder to play the game. Unlike Minecraft, the mode comes with preset builds. Don't know how to make a rustic cabin, use the preset. If you do want to stretch your wings, you can choose your own pieces. However, Minecraft is better in this aspect. In LEGO Fortnite, you can only use the piece they provide. Sure you can place that castle wall anywhere you want, but it is the castle wall that comes with the game. In Minecraft, you are placing each block, so you can make the castle wall look however you want.

Building in LEGO Fortnite is a little bit faster than Minecraft. In Minecraft, you are placing each block. In LEGO Fortnite, you are placing sections and going through steps. Some of the builds have many steps with many sections to place within the step, kind of like building a physical LEGO set. I do like that the sections will snap into place. As long as you get close to the highlighted area, the game will snap it into position.

One problem I found with LEGO Fortnite is the hunger system. It seemed like I was always hungry. It seemed like I was constantly having to stop and eat. When you're in the middle of a build that can be annoying. You have to stop building, eat, start building again, and stop building a few minutes later to eat again.

I do have to say that I played for an hour, and I had my village up to level 3 and had 2 villagers. I felt that I accomplished something. However, I'd also been playing for an hour and hadn't unlocked any weapons better than an axe or pickaxe. It made it not very fun exploring when there are foes around and all I have is a pickaxe.

If I could only pick one survival/sandbox game, because of some weird video game apocalypse, I'd say LEGO Fortnite because of the causal gamer friendly builds, guides, and NPCs--I like my "crowded" video games.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
