Deathless is a supernatural comic book series by Anthony LaFauci and Stephen Todd. The series follows Douglas as he tries to rid himself of the ancient being that now possesses him. The only way to free himself is by vanquishing the ancient demons that have been released. Unfortunately, those demons have possessed his roommates. I would recommend this series to lovers of supernatural, horror, and Dungeon and Dragon type stories.

The artwork is amazing. It is so vibrant. The way the mystical energy is drawn looks like mystical lights. It looks like it is part of the world. Since this is the first issue, there isn’t much of a dive into all the characters. You do get some sense of the side/villain characters, but not much to pin down. You do learn about the main character, Douglas. You can tell that he’s trying to be responsible; he’s trying to “grow-up” while his roommates are still be, uh, less responsible. You can tell that Douglas isn’t the most outgoing or warrior-like. You can also see the relationship between Deathless, the possessing spirit, and Douglas.

The issue has some funny parts, like Deathless keeps calling Douglas a “lover of tails of ponies,” because one time Douglas mentions his boss’s ponytail. The humor isn’t exactly laugh out loud; it kind of sneaks up on you and then you laugh out loud. For instance, Douglas falls out of a window and Deathless states, “This does not feel like flying.” The joke catches you off guard, making you laugh harder.

The book flows effortlessly. There aren’t any jerky moments that feel out of place. I felt like I was always moving forward. Everything felt like it had a place, even the humor. The humor didn’t feel like it was added just to be funny but to add something to the plot or the characters.

Deathless offers vibrant images, interesting characters, and humor. It is worth looking into if you like the supernatural, ancient battles between good and evil, or just like geeky things.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I really liked it; it wasn’t the best story ever, but well worth the money. I’m looking forward to reading more.
