Self, on Disney+, is about a wooden doll who quickly finds out she doesn’t fit in with the metallic-like dolls. She isn’t able to “speak” the same ringing tone. She then makes a wish and soon metallic pieces fall from the sky; she is able to slowly transform herself into everyone else. I would recommend watching this short to teens or others who might feel like they need to “change to impress.” That being said, the short also might be triggering for some people.
The character design was great. The wooden doll was very expressive. There was no dialogue but you could tell what she was thinking and feeling. The music was great. It fit well with what was happening on screen. It did a wonderful job of being dramatic but not scary; it could be sad but not depressing.
However, the short might not be the best for everyone. The doll does rip off her body parts in order to replace them with the “better” pieces. It also might be triggering to some people who feel that they have to change themselves to fit in, such as someone who might starve themselves.
I think the story was well done. It was a great way to show that you need to be yourself in a way that wasn’t scary or calling people out. Having a doll be the character allowed some distance. The way the creators presented the story through expressions and music was very creative. I would definitely recommended it, especially if you know someone who might be going through a tough time for whatever reason.
I enjoyed it. It isn’t my favorite; I‘ll probably never watch it again, but I’m glad I watched it.
