[Did you watch the Superman movie?]

I did.

[Did you read the Welcome to Metropolis book?]

I did.

[Well…?]

I liked that it was short. Took me about 3-4 hours to read.

[Is that all?]

Pretty much.

[Come on.]

OK.

It fit the tone of the movie well. You can tell that it is a prequel. It had the same humor and comic book-like style to it. It felt like a superhero story much like the movie felt like a superhero story. More importantly, it felt like a Superman story.

I had no problem picturing each scene and each character. (Seeing the movie might have helped with that.) The descriptions were well done but not so much that it’d bore the target audience. For instance, Lewman didn’t spend five paragraphs describing Superman’s suit; we pretty much know what it looks like…even if you haven’t seen the movie or saw anything regarding it.

You got to see some of Clark’s mental struggles like worrying if he’ll ever fit in, but it didn’t absorb the story. His internal conflicts were there but as side problems. If you’re looking for a story with rich, complex characters and deep, soulful conflicts, you’re looking at the wrong place; the characters are developed but most of what you see you probably already know–like Lois is a tough, through reporter that doesn’t take guff from anyone. If you want a story of fun, hope, action, and humor this book will work.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
